Cattle Drives

2004 - Julia Creek to Longreach

In 2004 LHRPHC initiated an Indigenous Cattle Drive from Julia Creek to Longreach, a journey of nearly 500 kilometres with 1200 steers. Three Indigenous Pastoral Companies were involved; Calton Hills from Mount Isa, Delta Downs from Normanton and LHRPHC, along with Centacare Mount Isa. The aim of the trip was to give more Indigenous Youth the opportunity to participate in our programs and the best way we know to attract young people is the romantic image of riding horses and chasing cattle. 36 young Aboriginal men came on the Cattle Drive; over $ 60 000 was raised from business for a scholarship fund which allowed 12 participants to attend Longreach Pastoral College for 7 weeks at the end of the Drive. One of the main goals of the Drive was to showcase three independently successful Aboriginal owned Pastoral Companies who were investing in their future by investing in their youth.

2005 - Riversleigh and Delta Downs

In 2005 a similar program was run on Riversleigh and Delta Downs over a three week period which focused on Personal Development dealing with more of the Life Skills issues.
